Module 6

by Jerrod Pickering

October 21, 2008

A.D.D.I.E. Model- The ADDIE model of instructional design is a generic outline of setting up any distance education course.  The purpose of this model is to provide the instructor with the basic steps necessary to design an effective course.

Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction-  Gagne’s model is a more specific model that seems to be geared more towards specific lessons rather than an entire course.

ADDIE

GAGNE

Strengths

Easy to remember; generic (can be applied to most any course)

Very in depth look at the lesson design process

Weaknesses

Because it is so generic, some instructors might use it and never grow as an educator

Can be too detailed to use for every lesson

Similarities

Systematic process of design; easy to use; a few similar sequences

Differences

Broad scope, generic (used for planning courses)

Narrow scope, specific to a lesson

Personal Reaction

The ADDIE model is easy to remember and can be beneficial for both novice and experienced teachers.

While working on my undergraduate teaching degree, I learned how to create a Madeline Hunter lesson plan.  The lesson plan format was good in learning how to think through a lesson, however, in real teaching; it takes too long to write up.  I believe the Gagne model is similar.  It helps the instructor think through the ID process, however, it seems too much for each individual lesson.
